It was ruled by Vytautas the Great — the same name proudly carried by our university today. For centuries, Baltic amber travelled through Europe as a precious trade treasure. In the 16th century, Lithuania created one of Europe’s first legal codes — the Statutes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania — helping shape the idea of a modern state. Even during difficult times in the 19th century, Lithuanians secretly smuggled books to protect their language, one of the oldest in the world. Resilience is part of who we are.
